China Import and Export Fair, also known as the Canton Fair, was established in the spring of 1957. Co-hosted by the Ministry of Commerce of PRC and the People’s Government of Guangdong Province and organized by China Foreign Trade Centre, it is held every spring and autumn in Guangzhou, China. The Canton Fair is a comprehensive international trading event with the longest history, the largest scale, the most complete exhibit variety, the largest buyer attendance, the most diverse buyer source country and the greatest business turnover in China. It is hailed as China’s No.1 Fair and the barometer of China’s foreign trade.

As China’s first window of opening up, the Canton Fair has undergone various challenges and never been interrupted since its inception. It has witnessed the glorious progress of China’s foreign trade. As a bridge connecting China and the world, Canton Fair is the place where numerous Chinese enterprises go bigger, stronger and global. It is also a platform for win-win cooperation between different countries and regions, where worldwide businessmen connect with China, share opportunities and pursue common development. It has contributed significantly to the economic and trade ties between China and the rest of the world and the development of world trade.

The Central Committee of the CPC attaches great importance to the Canton Fair. President Xi Jinping sent congratulatory letters to the 120th and 130th Canton Fair. In his letter to the 130th Canton Fair, President Xi noted that it made significant contribution over the past 65 years, giving the Fair a new historic mission and pointing a way for the Fair in the new journey ahead.

In spring of 2023, the 133rd Canton Fair fully resumed its onsite exhibition for the first time after COVID-19. The exhibition scale reached a record high of 1.5 million square meters, with 16 categories and 54 exhibition sections. The Fair’s online platform was operated on a regular basis. The 133rd Canton Fair registered 35,000 and 39,000 exhibitors onsite and online respectively, and attracted domestic and international buyers from 229 countries and regions to its physical and virtual exhibitions. To date, the total number of overseas buyers attending the Canton Fair onsite and online has exceeded 10 million and the accumulated export volume has amounted to about USD 1.5 trillion, which boosts China’s foreign trade development and opening up on all fronts and serves the building of the new development paradigm.

As China’s premier trade promotion platform, the Canton Fair directly links domestic and international markets and serves as the linchpin of the dual circulation. It enjoys a unique position in building the new development paradigm. As we embark on the new journey of building China into a modern socialist country and advancing the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation, the Canton Fair will fully implement the spirit of the 20th National Congress of the CPC and President Xi’s congratulatory letter, and follow through the decisions of the CPC Central Committee and the State Council, as well as the requirements of the Ministry of Commerce and Guangdong Province. All-round efforts will be made to innovate mechanism, create more business models and expand the Fair’s role to become a vital platform for China’s opening-up on all fronts, the high-quality development of global trade and the dual circulation of domestic and overseas markets, so as to better serve national strategies, high-quality opening up, the innovative development of foreign trade, and the building of a new development paradigm. The Canton Fair strives to make new and bigger contribution to accelerating China’s transformation into a trader of quality, promoting high-quality development of the Belt and Road Initiative, preserving the diversity and stability of the international economic landscape and economic and trade relations and building a community with a shared future for mankind.
